Traces of Reality
August 04, 2012
“[W]hen one lies, one should lie big, and stick to it…even at the risk of looking ridiculous.” -Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Minister of Propaganda
In politics a noble lie is a myth or untruth, often, but not invariably, of a religious nature, knowingly told by an elite to maintain social harmony or to advance an agenda. The noble lie is a concept originated by Plato as described in “The Republic.”
Americans in the 21st century accept the idea that politicians lie as a matter of course. Politics and honesty are considered diametric opposites to all except the most naive. But a Big Lie, principally a Lie disseminated from the “noble” elite caste, escapes such detection. Cognitive dissonance permeates the whole of society in this regard, and the menace posed by the threat of international terrorism or transnational drug cartels establishes the rationale for security über alles. This is precisely the basis for the locust infestation plaguing the sky over Laredo, Texas at present. However, insects these are not — these pests are black helicopters flying in formation, and drones will soon accompany them.
As Traces of Reality has explored recently, the militarization of the airspace above Webb County has begun in earnest with virtually no opposition. While a handful of citizens question the usefulness of Apaches and Blackhawks whirling above their homes, too many, unfortunately, welcome these measures as necessary in this so-called “post-9/11 world.”
Terrorism abroad and drug-related violence escalating on the other side of the Rio Grande has given local politicians the perfect excuse for the Department of Homeland Security (via Customs and Border Protection, or CBP) and the Department of Defense (via USNORTHCOM’s Joint Task Force North, or JTFN) to establish a soon-to-be permanent presence in the Gateway Checkpoint City. However, the pretense of safety and security crumbles quickly under critical examination.
Take for instance, the amorphous threat posed by Islamic terrorist networks such as al-Qaeda. Prior to America’s “New Pearl Harbor,” the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, terrorism was mostly a preoccupation of Middle East states or Southeast Asian countries. Suicide-terror researcher and scholar Robert Pape, Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, has determined that suicide-terrorism is not exclusive to Islamic radicals, contrary to popular belief. In fact, the phenomena of suicide-terrorism coincides with indigenous peoples desperate to expel foreign military viewed as invading or occupying forces encroaching into their respective home territories. But don’t mention this to flag-festooned Uh’merkans, lest one be tarred and feathered as a traitor to the Almighty State.
This fact, in and of itself, proves the point that the threat of terror along the U.S.-Mexico border is miniscule to nonexistent. Expect ambitious politicos to ignore this reality and supplant it with fear and vaunting to manufacture the National Security State in Dear Leader’s Glorious Image.
Also consider the machinations by which the most notable foiled terrorist plots of recent memory have played out. In the case of “Dirty Bomber” and “enemy combatant” Jose Padilla, the proceedings themselves should have been enough to result in a mistrial. Despite being imprisoned in 2002 by acolytes of the Bush Administration, denied access to a lawyer, held in solitary confinement without charge, abused and tortured, Padilla’s railroading is still held up as an example of an early victory in the War on Terror. Ultimately, he was charged five years later with “supporting Islamic terrorism overseas,” as declared by a federal court while accusations of the “dirty bomb” plot fell by the wayside. The first salvo in the War on Due Process was launched, and America continues to get shelled by those in positions of power who seek to rule by decree.
The witch-hunt continued with the 2007 Fort Dix Six plot, and in 2009 with the Bronx Four. In both instances, low-grade minority patsies of little means and meager competence were sought out, paid or supplied with the adequate tools for other government agents and politicians to make examples of them.
The Fort Dix Six in particular had been accused of plotting to sneak into a U.S. Army base and opening fire with machine guns to kill as many soldiers as possible. An attorney for one of the defendants alleged that “the only terrorist conspiracy was one planted and nurtured by the informant [Mahmoud Omar].” Omar had been paid six-figures by the FBI for his assistance with the “sting,” but nevermind that fact, opine the genuflectors of the Leviathan state.
The Bronx Four were entrapped by similar measures thanks to another couple of FBI informants, one of whom was compensated to the tune of $97,000. That all of these men could barely maintain steady employment or exhibit motivation to accomplish much of anything, such as bombing synagogues or shooting down military aircraft with Stinger missiles, seems beside the point to inquisitors of the FBI. Federal agents pose as the heroes as they arrest the numbskulls which they supplied and tracked: Mission accomplished.
More recently, “Underwear Bomber” Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s capture and conviction has created the pretext for the TSA to engage in gate rape (for the safety of the passengers, of course). The circumstances surrounding this incident reek of some sort of psychological operation from hell, as reports quickly emerged to undermine the official Lie.
Kurt Haskell, A Michigan attorney and passenger aboard the flight that Abdulmutallab was convicted of attempting to blow up by lighting his crotch on fire, has been outspoken and questions the entire series of events. From the manner in which the accused was allowed to board the flight without a passport, to the “well-dressed man” who escorted Abdulmuttalab through customs, and the haphazard post-flight investigation, the whole episode should set off any thinking person’s bullshit detector.
Not to worry, however, Abdulmutallab later pled guilty to all charges, and down the memory hole it goes. Together with the failed December, 2001 plot by “Shoe Bomber” Richard Reid, Abdulmutallab has engendered a whole new, sickening air travel experience for all Americans, questionable details referenced above notwithstanding.
But the real coup de grâce for the War of Terror Against Terror arose when President Barack Obama ordered the CIA drone execution of Islamic imam and American citizen Anwar al-Awlaki. With no charges, no trial, no Due Process, or even the consultation of the United States Congress, Obama sicced Lockheed Martin Hellfire missiles to vaporize al-Awlaki, and two weeks later, his 16-year old son Abdul-Rahman al-Awlaki. Fifth Amendement be damned.
The fact that Anwar al-Awlaki had been invited as a guest to a formal Pentagon luncheon in the U.S. Secretary of the Army’s Office of General Counsel mere months after the attacks of September 11, 2001 seems to have escaped the memory of most Americans applauding the murder. Just like Osama bin Laden, al-Awlaki exemplifies the on-again-off-again relationship that terrorist operatives have with U.S. intelligence and defense agencies. Yesterday’s allies become tomorrow’s enemies, when the agenda suits those in exalted positions of power and privilege.
Note: In Part Two of this article, Danny Benavides will continue to scrutinize the phony pretense of safety and security trotted out by pious panderers of the establishment. The Big Lie of modern-day America rests on the shoulders of the War on Terror mythos, but along the borderlands, violent narco-terrorists remain the most imminent danger. Heavily-armed drug-cartel organizations run roughshod over elected government and local law enforcement, and many citizens of the Southwest are all too ready to acquiesce their liberty and property to the federal tyranny of good intentions. Traces of Reality will keep readers informed of the DHS and DOD takeover of the Webb County area, and what can be done to restore sanity to this country before the locust swarm of military apparatus precipitates a famine of freedom.
