Narconoia Podcast 2 (5/16/15) : Mexico’s Narco-Insurgency, Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion
For this second episode of Narconoia, the duration of the podcast is spent ruminating on CJNG, Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (or Jalisco New Generation Cartel). Although this criminal organization has been operating independently along central Mexico for over 5 years, it has catapulted itself to become the highest-priority target for Enrique Peña Nieto’s administration in a matter of months after a series of brazen, well-coordinated attacks against federal authorities.
Last month, the United States Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control blacklisted CJNG, its leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, an affiliated gang called “Los Cuinis,” and its boss Abigael “El Cuini” Gonzalez Valencia, Mencho’s brother-in-law. Meanwhile, Mexican federal forces had assembled to launch a night-raid to capture or kill Mencho Oseguera, ushering in the “dawn” of the so-called “Operation Jalisco” during the morning news on May 1.
Instead, the raid was a failure, Mencho escaped, troops and police were killed, arson spread across Jalisco state, and a Mexican military helicopter was shot down with an RPG.
Danny provides a brief history of Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion, examines some significant events over the past few months leading up to May Day’s mayhem, and questions the source(s) of this cartel’s expert-training, high-powered weaponry, and its leader’s network of corruption. And why is a U.S. commando cropping up in the midst of a paramilitary criminal organization like CJNG?
